Naomi Osaka Turns Wimbledon’s All-White Tradition Into a Powerful Fashion Statement

Naomi Osaka made a memorable entrance at the opening day of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, transforming the tournament’s iconic all-white dress code into a celebration of Japanese heritage and craftsmanship.

Rather than challenging Wimbledon’s long-standing tradition, Osaka embraced it with a custom-designed walk-on ensemble titled “Evolving Ceremony.” The performance began as she walked from the locker room to the court wearing layered white garments that were dramatically removed to reveal her match attire underneath, creating a striking one-minute presentation.

The outfit was created by Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi in collaboration with Nike’s creative team. Inspired by the traditional shiromuku bridal kimono and the layered junihitoe court dress from Japan’s Heian period, the design incorporated upcycled vintage kimonos, a ceremonial bridal garment, and reconstructed wedding dresses. Embroidered cranes, symbolizing longevity and good fortune, climbed across the fabric alongside delicate cherry blossom motifs. The look was completed with a traditional kanzashi hairpin, Mikimoto pearls, and a flowing bow.

Beneath the ceremonial layers, Osaka wore Nike’s all-white “Slam” dress, inspired by the Japanese art of kirigami. Featuring intricate micro-pleating, floral appliqués, and crystal accents, the dress quickly sold out after its online release.

The fashion moment comes at an important stage in Osaka’s career. A four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, she is seeking her strongest Wimbledon performance after never advancing beyond the third round. Entering the tournament ranked No. 14, she arrived with renewed confidence following her first career grass-court final in Bad Homburg.
