Karmelo Anthony’s Appeal Gets New Legal Team
A coalition of prominent Texas attorneys has stepped forward to lead the appeal of Karmelo Anthony’s murder conviction, marking a significant development in the high-profile case.
The newly formed legal team, operating under the banner of the Stand With Karmelo Coalition, announced that it will represent Anthony on a pro bono basis as he seeks to challenge his conviction through the appellate courts.
The coalition includes six experienced attorneys with backgrounds in criminal law, civil rights litigation, and appellate advocacy. Among them is Russell Wilson II, a veteran appellate lawyer and former Dallas County prosecutor. He is joined by Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP; Michael Ware, executive director of the Innocence Project of Texas; civil rights attorney Brooke Cluse; and attorneys Sean Daredia and Justin A. Moore.
According to the coalition, the team’s primary focus will be reviewing the trial record and identifying legal issues that may form the basis of Anthony’s appeal. The attorneys stated that they are committed to ensuring a thorough examination of the case and pursuing all available legal avenues.
The involvement of several well-known legal advocates has drawn attention to the appeal, particularly given the team’s experience in handling complex criminal and civil rights cases. Supporters of Anthony view the coalition’s participation as an opportunity to secure a comprehensive review of the conviction.
The appeals process will now move forward under the guidance of the new legal team, which is expected to file motions and legal briefs outlining its arguments before the appropriate appellate court.
Further details regarding the specific grounds for the appeal have not yet been publicly disclosed.
