Brian Laundrie’s Parents Faced Years of Fury After Gabby Petito’s Disappearance

For years after Gabby Petito’s death, Brian Laundrie’s parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, remained at the center of public anger and intense scrutiny.

The controversy began in September 2021, when Petito, a 22-year-old travel vlogger from Long Island, was reported missing after she stopped communicating with her family during a cross-country trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. Laundrie had returned to his Florida home alone, driving Petito’s van.

A 2022 Florida court order noted that, for purposes of deciding a motion to dismiss, the court had to assume certain allegations in the complaint were true. The order specifically emphasized that these were allegations, not proven facts.

The Laundries denied wrongdoing and challenged the lawsuit, describing the allegations as baseless. Their attorney maintained that the family had acted on legal advice and that they were not responsible for Brian’s actions.

The Search for Gabby

Petito’s remains were discovered in Wyoming on September 19, 2021. An autopsy determined that she had died from strangulation. Meanwhile, authorities continued searching for Laundrie in Florida.

Weeks later, his remains were found in the Carlton Reserve. Investigators also discovered a notebook in which Laundrie accepted responsibility for Petito’s death. The FBI subsequently reported that he had attempted to deceive law enforcement by sending messages from Petito’s phone after her death.

The discovery brought a tragic conclusion to a case that had captivated the country.

Years of Legal and Public Fallout

The controversy surrounding the Laundrie family did not end with the deaths of Gabby and Brian.

Petito’s parents pursued civil litigation against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, arguing that the parents’ conduct during the search caused them severe emotional distress. The case continued through depositions and additional legal filings, keeping the family’s actions under public scrutiny.

In 2024, the two families reached a confidential settlement in the emotional-distress lawsuit. Separately, the Petito family had previously reached a $3 million settlement involving Brian Laundrie’s estate.
