Williams had accompanied a friend to an appointment to discuss freezing her eggs when she decided to get checked herself, since they were visiting her own fertility doctor. But as the doctor performed the exam, Williams could tell something was wrong.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cShe started looking into doing the exam and she went silent,\u201d Williams said. \u201cAnd I looked at the screen and all I could see was black, and then I started seeing some circular lines. And I was like, \u2018Not again. Not again.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Williams knew what she was seeing, since\u00a0<a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/parents\/porsha-williams-pregnant-hospitalized-uterine-fibroids\/\" rel=\"null\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">fibroids had caused serious complications for her<\/a>\u00a0years earlier.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Uterine fibroids are common, noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during a person\u2019s reproductive years, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/uterine-fibroids\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"null noopener\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Mayo Clinic.<\/a>\u00a0Symptoms can include heavy or painful periods, pelvic, stomach or lower back pain, frequent urination, constipation and pain during sex.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This time, Williams was quickly referred to a fertility specialist. \u201cWhen she did the vaginal check, she was in shock because everything had pretty much flattened,\u201d Williams recalled.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The specialist sent her for an MRI within hours and scheduled surgery for approximately two weeks later. But at 45, she initially attributed the changes to perimenopause, as her menstrual cycle had stretched to approximately six weeks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">It never occurred to her that she could be facing fibroids a second time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Williams was first diagnosed with the condition in her late 20s while experiencing fertility issues. After she became pregnant, doctors discovered a fibroid that they initially believed might degenerate as the pregnancy progressed. Instead, Williams said, it continued growing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cIt ended up outgrowing the first baby at 4 months, so I had a miscarriage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Williams subsequently underwent a myomectomy, a surgery to remove uterine fibroids while preserving the uterus.
