In the evening, I went into the garage and saw this on the wall.

It took days before I dared to get close enough to really inspect it. The wall felt colder there, the air heavier, carrying that faint, earthy smell you notice only when you stop breathing for a second. The “stain” wasn’t flat at all; it was layered, swollen, almost pulsing in the half-light. I remember thinking how absurd it was to be afraid of a wall, yet my fingers still hovered a few inches away, refusing to touch.

Only after searching online and speaking with a neighbor did the fear give way to a different kind of unease. It wasn’t a chemical leak or some unknown creature. It was fungus, thriving silently on trapped moisture and neglect. The discovery felt strangely intimate, like the house had been whispering a warning I chose not to hear. In the end, cleaning it wasn’t the hardest part—admitting how long I’d ignored it was.
