Marilyn Monroe and Britney Spears Are Distant Cousins, Genealogical Records Reveal
Two of pop culture’s most recognizable blonde icons—Marilyn Monroe and Britney Spears—share an unexpected family connection, according to genealogical research.
Celebrity genealogy website Famous Kin traced both stars’ family trees and found that Monroe and Spears are ninth cousins, three times removed. Their lineage reportedly leads back to the same 17th-century ancestors, Richard Scott and Catherine Marbury.
Richard Scott was an early settler of Rhode Island and a prominent Quaker leader, while Catherine Marbury came from a family known for its religious influence during colonial America. Through their descendant Elizabeth “Betty” Hall, born in England in 1607, the family lines of Monroe and Spears eventually converge.
Despite the intriguing discovery, the relationship is an extremely distant one. Genealogy experts note that ninth cousins typically share less than 0.06% of their DNA, making the connection more of a historical curiosity than a meaningful genetic link.
Even so, the revelation has fascinated fans online. Discussions on platforms like Reddit and Instagram often highlight the similarities between the two women, both of whom became defining figures of their generations.
Marilyn Monroe rose to international fame as one of Hollywood’s most enduring screen legends, while Britney Spears became one of the biggest pop stars of the late 1990s and 2000s. Both women captivated audiences with their talent and charisma while also enduring years of intense media attention and public scrutiny.
Although their family connection is separated by centuries, many fans see the discovery as another remarkable coincidence linking two cultural icons whose lives left an unforgettable mark on entertainment history.
